Rookie question, I'm sure (which shows that I'm not qualified to a volunteer moderator :o)
The theme I chose has a few less than desirable links in the footer. Can I remove or should I just grow up, live with it or pick another theme?
Thanks!

It depends which theme you're using.
Generally it's a bad idea to edit the links out. It's especially unethical if the link is for the author you designed your theme and made your site look so nice..
A lot of authors discourage it. Some even lock the code so that you don't even have the option to change it. Ultimately, it's up to you. But you shouldn't be messing around with the code unless you are feeling comfortable with HTML, CSS and maybe even a little PHP.
