In WordPress Direct, there is a section in "Manage My Sites" that has a list of "Options" to choose from. One of these says, "Manage Categories". What are "Categories"? How do these "categories" affect your website and its' ranking? What is the purpose of these "categories"?

Some of my keywords showed up in "categories" - others did not. All of my keywords are listed under the option of "Website Settings".

I am unfamiliar with the purpose of the option "Manage Categories" and how it affects my website. Could someone please explain?

Hi,
Categories are essentially secondary keywords. Supposing you have done keyword research on a niche.
You got these keywords, ranked by highest traffic:
1.reverse osmosis filtration
2.water filters whole house
3.water bottle filter
4.water replacement filters
5.water osmosis system
So, your URL is www.reverseosmosisfiltration.com
Your Title is Reverse Osmosis Filtration Blog
Why? Because 1.reverse osmosis filtration got 1,200 searches per day.
Your categories would be:
2.water filters whole house---1,000 searches per day.
3.water bottle filter------------990 searches per day.
4.water replacement filters-----800 searches per day.
5.water osmosis system--------700 searches per day.
These lessor keywords are getting traffic, but you are not going to build a blog on them. You post content in the categories, bookmark it, and rank additionally for these other keywords.
Think of it as a Keyword Cluster. Instead of getting organic traffic for just your main keyword, you will get it for all the keywords.

the Manage Keywords section is so that you can add or delete keywords that you may care to try.

I hope this was helpful.

The info you provided was very helpful.

So, what you are telling me is the keywords that I had set up in "Website Settings" should also be in "Manage Categories" - correct?

Yes, exactly. The difference being, you are able to add or remove keywords there.
